We only use dry cleaning as it is safer for most carpets – it will not shrink the carpet or cause water staining if applied unevenly. Alternate wet cleaning methods inject hot water and detergent into the carpet pile under pressure. A vacuum is then used to extract the liquid and dissolved soil. It is impossible to vacuum all of the dissolved soil from a wet carpet. Many machines only remove 50% of the dirty water. Carpets may re-soil quickly and spots may reappear as the moisture wicks back up the carpet fibre. A wet carpet may take 8-36 hours to dry depending on humidity. That’s long enough for mould spores to grow. In fact, biological allergens thrive and multiply in moist or damp areas.

Expert advice suggests to keep Persian carpets completely free of water and if it gets wet, to dry it quickly.  This advice ultimately does not therefore condone any type of cleaning process where the carpet is wet and soaped down.  Heavy scrubbing machines should also be prohibited so this effectively eliminates the use of water based carpet cleaners entirely. Persian and wool carpets should simply not be wet at all as this rapidly ages the item and raises issues of colour fading, carpet bumps, split seams and shrinkage. Wool can retain water longer and as expected can result in mildew and odours.
Persian carpets and those made with varying percentages of wool should only be cleaned with an approved process that does not shrink or damage the carpet. Our equipment has already been approved for any wool or Persian carpet by carrying the Woolsafe accreditation.
